How Do You Choose a Fitness Program?

Honestly, the most important part of any workout plan is variety. In the simplest sense, consider that to remain functionally fit for life you need to address the needs of both your heart and muscles; cardiovascular and muscular/skeletal systems. And then with that in mind, build variety into your plan.

From the photo above you can see that this person is outside, perhaps on a walk or a jog, and in the middle of it he throws in some pushups. I tell this to my clients often. "Hey on your next power walk, find a park bench and do some of the deep stretches or abdominal exercises that we do in our classes." Or I tell them to take different routes for that walk and maybe include hills once in awhile. The point is try to switch up your moves so that your body is being asked to respond to new challeges.

Another way to build in variety is to take part in several different types of classes within a week. During Covid, I opened an online gym and became the only source of fitness for my clients. To make sure I kept them healthy and injury free, I offered several different types of classes throughout the week. Weight lifting, yoga, Essentrics, Aerobics and even dance. At one point I even added morning meditation time. And then I left each client to tailor make their plan based on their abilities and needs.

Once you find a new class to enjoy, make sure that the instructor is building in variety at regular intervals so that you remain challenged and avoid overuse injuries.

I can feel the buzz of the fall season upon us. People are looking for new classes and new opportunities to stay fit.

I will be opening up my in person classes in Vankleek Hill to new clients. Registration begins on August 30th. You will be able to book your classes through my website on that day. To see the Fall 2026 schedule you can look here VANKLEEK HILL CLASSES

I hope to see you soon.
